Originally designed after the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Ellis Park of Henderson, Ky. features a 1.125-mile dirt track for thoroughbred horse racing. Only minutes south of Evansville, Ellis Park lies on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, due to state borders being drawn up based on the course of the river in 1792.
The Green River Jockey Club built the racetrack in 1922, but the facility went bankrupt three years later when it was purchased by its namesake, James C. Ellis. Over the years the facility has undergone several architectural additions and changes in ownership, including a stint under management by Churchill Downs (1998-2006). Today, Kentucky businessman Ron Geary owns the track.
