What began as George Mesker's $25,000 gift to the City of Evansville in 1916 fueled a series of events that would turn an undeveloped 50-acre picnic area on Evansville's Northwest side into one of the country's finest zoos.
A staple pastime and arguably one of Evansville's greatest attractions since its 1928 opening, Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Gardens is still situated on that same acreage.
As one of the oldest zoos in Indiana, Mesker is home to more than 700 animals spanning 200 species — all displayed in natural habitats and surrounded by exotic foliage. According to their website, Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden's mission is to foster the preservation of the Earth's diverse species and living systems through an active role in education and conservation.
